Black Wall Street Augusta

The Black Wall Street Augusta initiative is part of a broader national effort to revive and strengthen Black business districts, fostering economic development and prosperity.

In a historic move to honor the legacy of African American entrepreneurship and economic resilience, the City of Augusta proudly announces the establishment of Black Wall Street Augusta. The newly designated district will span the historic area bounded by Walton Way, Laney Walker Boulevard, 15th Street, Broad Street, East Boundary, and Sand Bar Ferry Road—rich in African American history, commerce, and culture.

The Black Wall Street Augusta initiative is part of a broader national effort to revive and strengthen Black business districts, fostering economic development and prosperity. This endeavor aims to empower Black-owned businesses, create generational wealth, and transform the region into a thriving economic hub for residents, visitors, and entrepreneurs alike.

The Right Spirit: A Commitment to Progress

The development of Black Wall Street Augusta is rooted in the spirit of unity, resilience, and economic empowerment. This initiative draws inspiration from the historic Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma—also known as Black Wall Street—which was a thriving center of Black commerce before its destruction in 1921. Augusta’s effort seeks to recapture and build upon this legacy, ensuring a prosperous future for Black entrepreneurs and community stakeholders.

The implementation process for Black Wall Street Augusta follows the proven 8-step Black Wall Street USA District framework, designed to guide the successful development and sustainability of Black business districts. The process is as follows:

The Black Wall Street District

The first step is to formally recognize the designated area as a Black Wall Street district. This involves engaging local officials, community leaders, and businesses to secure the designation and promote awareness of the initiative’s goals.

Measurable Objectives

Clear and attainable objectives will be established to ensure the district's success. These include increasing Black-owned business ownership, improving infrastructure, boosting employment opportunities, and enhancing the overall economic climate.

District Evaluation

A comprehensive assessment of the district's current economic conditions, business landscape, and community needs will be conducted. This evaluation will identify strengths, challenges, and opportunities for growth.

Capacity Analysis

An analysis of the financial, human, and structural resources available within the district will be performed. This step will determine what additional investments, partnerships, and programs are necessary to support the district’s long-term success.

Feasibility Study

A feasibility study will examine the economic viability of the district, focusing on market trends, potential industries, and business opportunities. The study will provide critical data to guide decision-making and investment strategies.

Legislative Development

Local, state, and federal legislative support will be pursued to ensure policies and funding mechanisms are in place to facilitate growth and sustainability. Zoning regulations, tax incentives, and grants will be explored to benefit businesses and property owners within the district.

The Future

A comprehensive proposal will be developed, detailing the long-term vision, strategic goals, and investment opportunities within Black Wall Street Augusta. This document will serve as a roadmap for continued growth and expansion.

Implementation and Community Engagement

Once the foundational steps have been completed, the focus will shift to executing the plan through community engagement, business development programs, and ongoing support initiatives.

A Vision for the Future

Black Wall Street Augusta aims to be a beacon of economic empowerment, cultural pride, and business excellence. By fostering an environment where Black entrepreneurs can thrive, the district will contribute to the overall economic prosperity of Augusta and beyond.

The initiative will feature a range of programs and resources, including:

Business incubators and accelerators to support startups and emerging entrepreneurs
Access to capital, grants, and low-interest loans for Black-owned businesses
Workforce development programs to equip residents with skills for high-paying careers
Cultural and historical preservation efforts to honor the legacy of Black commerce in Augusta
Community events, festivals, and networking opportunities to strengthen local business ties

Community Support and Partnerships

The success of Black Wall Street Augusta relies on collaboration between local government, business leaders, community organizations, and residents. Public and private partnerships will play a crucial role in funding, developing, and sustaining the district.

“We are excited to launch Black Wall Street Augusta as a major step toward economic justice and community revitalization,” said [Local Official or Organizer]. “This district will serve as a model for economic empowerment and showcase the resilience, creativity, and brilliance of Black entrepreneurs.”

Community members and business owners are encouraged to participate in the initiative and take advantage of the numerous opportunities that will be made available.
