10 WHEREAS, Since the early 1940's, African American

11 businesses have thrived on East 75th Street, bringing quality

12 products and services to the community; in subsequent years,

13 these business owners saw a growth in their profits as they

14 were able to sustain a comfortable way of life for themselves

15 and their families; with the downturn in the economy over

16 recent years, some of the businesses that once flourished on

17 75th Street are now facing financial difficulties; and

18 WHEREAS, It has been determined, by the members of Black

1 WHEREAS, History will show that Black Wall Street-Chicago

2 continues the rich historical tradition of growth and

11 but two blocks of the old neighborhood have been restored and

12 are part of the Greenwood Historical District; and

13 WHEREAS, Black Wall Street-Chicago recognizes the

14 potential to recreate on East 75th Street in Chicago the

15 positive aspects of the historic Black Wall Street District in

18 stability and is one of the only business districts that has

19 African American ownership in parity with its population; and

Michael Carter, Sr., the national chairman of Black Wall Street USA says this is a welcomed recognition of the Spirit, labor and energy of Ron Carter, BWSC Chair and President (no relations to national chair) and the Black Wall Street Chicago staff.

Carter, Sr. said, "For our organization (Black Wall Street District USA) to accomplish this now, in President Barack Obama country, in his back yard, has God written all over it. Truly this is a day that the Black Wall Street District communities across the US can celebrate." The Black Wall Street District USA national headquarters are based in Oakland. There are Black Wall Street District's in Atlanta, Durham. and Minneapolis. According to Ben Johnson from the national office there are plans for expansion of Black Wall Street Districts in other US cities. Those cities being considered are Houston, Portland, Jackson Ward in Richmond, VA, Detroit, Miami and Philadelphia.

Ron Carter said, "This makes all of the hard work by our volunteer staff worth the blood, sweat and tears." he said "We are pleased with this recognition but there's still a ways to go yet, but it is indeed a positive development and a step in the right direction."

The Chicago Black Wall Street District staff have successfully planned ten Black Wall Street Economic Summits with over 150 resolutions voted on since 2007. The most recent Economic Summit X was held on Saturday, October 31st. The summit dealt with Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, Black Contractors in the Neighborhood and the Black Better Business Bureau and the designation of 75th Street as the Black Wall Street District in Chicago

Black Wall Street Economic Summit XI is scheduled for Sunday, January 31, 2010. The National Conference is scheduled for May 21-23, 2010 when the National Chairman Michael Carter, Sr. gives his annual address.

Carter, Sr. said, "This is not about black folks living today this is for future generations...people we will never meet, while paying spiritual homage to those we never met." He said "It's time we move from the mid-bar (the wilderness) and possess the land flowing with milk and honey."

Carter, Sr. said, "This story of the spirit of Tulsa, OK (1830 to 1921) is intriguing and exciting mainly because it was intentionally kept out of the history books and aggregate of courses of Black study in a schools, colleges and universities."

I would like to know more information about becoming a member of the Black Wall Street Organization. I would also like to know if there is any possibilty of starting a chapter in Ohio in the city of Columbus and hopes to branch out to other cities in the Ohio state. This has been my dream since I read the great book Black Wall Street In 1996. My dream is to bring our like minded brothers and sisters together to create a Conglomerate. This would enhance our business relationship and regain our idenity. Also to show our younger generation that we can come to together and improve our communties and ourselves as a whole. So if there is anything that I can do to make this nationwide or even worldwide then I hope you hear my words and take them into consideration and hope to make me apart of The Black Wall Street Organization, Sincerely Yours, Michael Jomo Favors

It's Black Friday! Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving in the United States, and it is usually one of the busiest retail shopping days of the year kicking off the Christmas shopping season. Black Friday is also the day when retailers supposedly get back "in the black" after operating "in the red" during the year. Retailers get in the black by creating their biggest sales of the year. It is expected the average consumer will spend $763 this holiday season, and online sales are expected to hit $26-billion this year. Considering these figures, I think it is important to keep black-owned and operated retailers in mind. With black buying power approaching $800-billion, it is reported the African-American/black dollar circulates less than once within the black community. This is less than any community in the United States. In order to be economically empowered, African-Americans should consider patronizing the many black-owned and operated retail establishments across the country especially during the holiday season. Many black retailers such as Carol's Daughter and Warm Spirit sell products online. Both sell beauty, haircare, and health products. There are black art galleries, such as Bayoc Studio in St. Louis that have online stores. Consider a local black-owned restaurant or coffee house that offers gift certificates. You can order a cake from Philadelphia's Sweet Jazmines or New York's Shakoor's Sweet Tooth. Yep, they will ship to you. Hurry before the holiday cut off dates though. As a gift for that avid reader, why not make a subscription to a black-owned publication that someone doesn't subscribe or buy it for yourself. And let's not forget black-owned bookstores and books by black authors. The Matah Network sells soaps, scents, shampoos, lotions, and other items. And Houston-based Cush City.com is America's Black Amazon.com. While it can be a little pricier than Amazon, the only way Cush City can become more competitive is if more people buy from it. Finding black-owned and operated retailers is not hard. In some cities "Black Wall Street" is reemerging. The Black Wall Street business district in Oakland is growing and tapping into the economic power of the San Francisco Bay Area's 504,000 African Americans. There are Black-owned businesses organized along International Boulevard. If there is no Black Wall Street in your city, just look in your local Black Pages, African-American Business Directory, African-American newspaper(s), or contact your local African-American/Black Chamber of Commerce for information. These resources are in most major cities. Terrence says let African-American retailers share in this Black Friday, and if not today, patronize many during the holiday season. Let's increase the amount of times the dollar circulates within our community. Our economic growth and future depends on it. http://terrencesays.blogspot.com

Something that seems to re-immortalize itself in my mind repeatedly is the story of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I pray every student in America learns the story of how it thrived, but yet was ultimately burned to the ground by an angry mob -primarily because it was black. All I can say is please do visit www.BlackWallStreet.org, and big ups to the folks in Tulsa and Oakland for holding it down and keeping that strong legacy alive. For those who may not know, both cities continue to represent the pinnacle of black unity historically, culturally, and in a most loving way. D. Morton Glover

Good Day, I wanted to take the time to Thank You and the BWS Team for the recent email I received. I don't know how BWS got on my email address, however the email landed in my inbox. I looked @ the website and was surprised to see the Foundation is based in one of my home towns. Oakland. I have fund memories of my old high school. Farwest High..John L Brown..I will never forget him or the Team that taught me many principles of life. Quick Testimony ..John L Brown's "SON" ... Was my Son's High School Instructor and Mentor! I relocated to Los Angeles Calif.. Is that God's plan in effect or what.. It was refreshing to see a well put together website. When I saw East Oakland Youth Center, that brought back memories as well. It is a blessing and encouraging to see the youth taking advantage of some of the services that are still out there for the youth. Keep up the good work BLACK WALL STREET! Any hew, I thank you for your time and I hope you have a Wonderful Day:) Ingrid Neal

Congratulations! Of all of the organizations covered in the tribune with respect to working to improve Black commerce in Oakland I have followed Black Wall Street most closely. I myself am a retired MBA who has been researching and gathering information on commerce in the Majority Black area of East Oakland with a concentration on Black owned businesses. It is ironic that I had planned to contact Black Wall Street in the near future to see if there would be an opportunity to meet with the principals of the organization and compare notes. I will in fact contact you in the next several weeks in attempt to arrange such a meeting. During my study of the Black Wall Street website I concluded that the invitation for membership shown there was for businesses and business owners. I applaud Black Wall Street for its work and congratulate you on your appointment. I am sure you will provide the leadership the Black Merchants of East Oakland need. Charles Brown
